Learn about OptiVega® ingredients

Vitamin A, Retinol

Vitamin A is essential for eye health, color vision, immune function, reproductive health and the growth and development of all cells.*

There are two forms of vitamin A in our foods: preformed vitamin A (retinol) from animal products (esp., meats, dairy, eggs) and provitamin A carotenoids (see beta-carotene) from fruit and vegetables (esp., carrots, sweet potatoes and green leafy vegetables). Vegan and vegetarian diets have very low or no preformed vitamin A, and many people are cannot efficiently convert beta-carotene into active vitamin A. That’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 600 mcg (= 2,000 IU) per day of vitamin A as bioavailable vitamin A acetate. This amount is very safe and effective, and it is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our preformed Vitamin A (retinyl acetate) is nature-identical vitamin A bound to acetate, a naturally-derived organic acid also found in vinegar. Retinyl acetate is extensively studied, and has excellent bioavailability. It is vegan, GMO-free, gluten-free, and kosher. We do not use vitamin A from fish liver oil, because it is lower in potency, it is not vegan/vegetarian and can be contaminated with environmental toxins.

Vitamin A, Beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is the most active form of provitamin form of Vitamin A, which is essential for eye health, color vision, immune function, reproductive health and the growth and development of all cells.* In addition, beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant nutrient.*

There are two forms of vitamin A in our foods: preformed vitamin A (retinol) from animal products (esp., meats, dairy, eggs) and provitamin A carotenoids (see beta-carotene below) from fruit and vegetables (esp., carrots, sweet potatoes and green leafy vegetables). Vegan and vegetarian diets generally provide more dietary beta-carotene than typical diets. That’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides a modest 1,000 mcg of vitamin A equivalents (RAE) which is equal to 2 mg (= 3,333 IU) per day of natural beta-carotene. This will result in a total beta-carotene intake that is very safe and effective, and it is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our beta-carotene is sourced from the healthy fungus Blakeslea trispora. This source provides a similar ratio of cis- and trans-beta-carotene that is found in a healthy diet. It is vegan, GMO-free, gluten-free, and kosher.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential for immune function, antioxidant defense, collagen formation for strong connective tissues, and for the production of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine.*

Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamin C, and vegan and vegetarian diets provide more vitamin C than typical diets. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 180 mg per day of vitamin C, which results in total daily intakes of 250-400 mg, which is the amount recommended by experts and that is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Vitamin C is sourced from naturally-derived ascorbic acid from non-GMO corn. It has been extensively purified to completely eliminate all potential corn allergens. It is vegan, GMO-free, gluten-free, and kosher.

Vitamin D, Vitashine D3

There are two natural forms of vitamin D: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3(cholecalciferol). Vitamin D is essential for bone health, calcium absorption, immune function and cell growth and development.*

It is considered a nutrient of public health concern, since 90% of Americans do not meet the requirement for vitamin D. For vegans and vegetarians, the risk of deficiency is even higher, because it occurs mainly in animal foods like fatty fish and fortified milk.

Unprotected sunlight UV expose is another source of vitamin D, but it carries the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, experts recommend supplementing with vitamin D. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 30 mcg (= 1,200 IU) per day of a 1:1 combination of vitamin D3 and D2. This will result in a total vitamin D intake that is very safe and effective, and it is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our vitamin D3 is sourced from naturally-derived cholecalciferol from lichen trademarked as Vitashine D3. This is the only truly vegan source of vitamin D3. It is non-GMO, gluten-free, and kosher.

Vitamin D, Vitamin D2

OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 30 mcg (= 1,200 IU) per day of a 1:1 combination of vitamin D2 and D3. This will result in a total vitamin D intake that is very safe and effective, and it is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our vitamin D2 is sourced from naturally-derived ergocalciferol from mushrooms. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, and kosher.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is essential for reproductive health, immune function and antioxidant defense, and it protects cell membranes and healthy skin.*

More than 90% of Americans do not meet the requirement (RDI) for vitamin E. Good food sources include vegetable oils, nuts and avocado, and vegans and vegetarians get more vitamin E than people on typical diets.

OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 30 mg (= 45 IU) per day of bioactive, natural vitamin E with all 4 tocopherols. When combined with vegan or vegetarian diets, the total vitamin E intake is very safe and effective, and it is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.* Recent, large human studies have shown that unnaturally high (non-physiological) doses of vitamin E supplements have no additional benefits.

Most mass market multivitamins use inexpensive synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol) which is much less active than the natural vitamin E we use. Our vitamin E is sourced from naturally-derived mixed tocopherols providing d-alpha-tocopherol, d-beta-tocopherol, d-gamma-tocopherol, and d-delta-tocopherol. It is extracted from soy bean oil which has been extensively purified to completely eliminate all potential soy allergens. It is vegan, GMO-free, gluten-free, and kosher. We do not use synthetic vitamin E, because it contains the inactive and unnatural dl-alpha-tocopherol isomer.

Vitamin K

There are two forms of natural vitamin K: vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K2(menaquinone). Vitamin K is essential for normal blood clotting and bone mineralization, and it helps prevent artery calcification.*

Vitamin K1 is found in green leafy vegetables and plant oils, while vitamin K2 is found in fermented foods and is made by our gut bacteria. Vegans and vegetarians tend to get adequate amounts of vitamin K from foods. That’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides only 40 mcg per day of vitamin K, which results in a total vitamin K intake that is very safe and effective, and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.* Very large amounts of vitamin K can interfere with blood thinner medications, such as warfarin.

Vitamin K1 is sourced from nature-identical phytonadione (phylloquinone). This is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of vitamin K1. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is sourced from a natural fermentation source as menaquinone-7 (MK7), which is the natural bioactive form of vitamin K2 with the highest bioavailability and longest half-life in the body. Both sources are vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Thiamin (Vitamin B1)

Thiamin (vitamin B1) is essential for energy metabolism to help convert food into usable energy, and it is required for enzymes involved in amino acid and glucose metabolism.*

Good thiamin sources include legumes, whole grains and pork products. Vegan and vegetarian diets generally have similar thiamin contents as regular diets. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 1.5 mg per day of thiamin to make sure the total intake that is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Thiamin is provided as nature-identical thiamin and stabilized using the mononitrate salt. This is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of thiamin. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is essential for energy metabolism to help convert food into usable energy, and it is required as a coenzyme for several important antioxidant enzymes in the body.*

Riboflavin is high in animal-derived foods, such as dairy products, meat, fish and eggs. Nuts and green vegetables contain smaller amounts. Vegans and vegetarians are at risk of riboflavin deficiency, and that’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 3.5 mg per day of riboflavin. This is an amount that ensures the total riboflavin intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Riboflavin is provided as nature-identical riboflavin, which is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of riboflavin. It is vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free.

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

Niacin (Vitamin B3) is essential for energy metabolism to help convert food into usable energy, and it assists in cellular DNA replication and repair.*

Niacin is high in animal foods, especially meats, but is also found in legumes and seeds. Numerous studies show that vegans and vegetarians may be at risk of niacin deficiency. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 35 mg niacin per day. This is an amount that ensures the total niacin intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Niacin is provided exclusively as niacinamide which is the well-tolerated (no skin flushing) form of niacin. Our niacinamide is nature-identical, vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is essential for energy metabolism to help convert food into usable energy, it helps make red blood cells, and it helps maintain normal homocysteine levels in the blood.* Good food sources include fish, poultry and nuts.

Vegans and vegetarians tend to get sufficient amounts of vitamin B6 from the diet, and OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 2 mg per day of vitamin B6 to ensure the total vitamin B6 intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Vitamin B6 is provided as nature-identical pyridoxine stabilized using the HCl salt. This is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of vitamin B6. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential for normal nerve function and for making red blood cells. It is also required to maintain normal blood levels of homocysteine.*

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal-based food sources, such as seafood, poultry and red meat. Many studies show that Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in vegans, vegetarians and the elderly. Symptoms include poor memory function and tingling and numbness in legs and arms. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 15 mcg per day of Vitamin B12 which is 6.25 times the Daily Value. This amount is very safe and effective, and it is well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

While most multivitamins use cyanocobalamin, our vitamin B12 is provided as naturally-derived methylcobalamin, which is the same form of vitamin B12 that circulates in blood. It is produced using a microbial fermentation process. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Folate

Folate (Vitamin B9) is essential for DNA synthesis, supports cell repair and growth, and helps prevent neural tube defects. It is also required to maintain normal blood levels of homocysteine.* Folate is found mainly in plant-based foods such as legumes and green leafy vegetables.

Several studies show that vegans and vegetarians obtain more folate from their diets than the general population. Cereals and bread are fortified in the USA with folic acid, a synthetic form that’s slowly converted to folate in the body. There is a concern that unmetabolized folic acid in blood may have adverse effects.

OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 200 mcg per day of folate to ensure the total folate intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Folate is provided by the calcium salt of nature-identical (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF). Unlike most multivitamins, we do not use folic acid, because it is slowly metabolized and many people have a genetically reduced ability to convert folic acid into the biologically active MTHF form. Our source of MTHF supplies only the (6S)-5’-methyltetrahydrofolate form, which is identical to the natural stereoisomer. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Biotin

Biotin (Vitamin B7) is essential for energy metabolism to help convert food into usable energy, and it assists in the body’s own production of glucose.* Biotin is found in many foods, including eggs, fish, and fruits. Some biotin is also made by a healthy intestinal microflora.

Vegans and vegetarians tend to get adequate but lower amounts of biotin from food compared to the general population. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 30 mcg per day to ensure the total biotin intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Biotin is provided as nature-identical d-biotin. This is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of biotin. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) is essential for energy metabolism to help convert food into usable energy. It also is essential for fat metabolism, the production of steroid hormones, neurotransmitters and hemoglobin, and it is required to detoxify many drugs and toxins in the liver.*

Good food sources of pantothenic acid include dairy products, meat, fish, seeds, legumes and sweet potatoes. Vegans and vegetarians tend to get adequate but lower amounts of pantothenic acid from food compared to the general population.

OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 10 mg of pantothenic acid per day to ensure the total intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our pantothenic acid is provided as nature-identical d-calcium pantothenate, which is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of pantothenic acid. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Calcium

Calcium is the main structural mineral of bones and teeth. It is essential for nerve function and muscle contraction, and helps maintain normal blood pressure and acid-base balance.*

Food sources include dairy products, sardines, legumes, tofu and green leafy vegetables. Vegan and vegetarian diets can be low in calcium and studies have shown lower bone mineral density in vegans. However, the common practice of supplementing with large amounts of calcium without the other bone nutrients (vitamins D and K, magnesium) has been shown to be problematic. That’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides a moderate 195 mg highly soluble calcium per day together with the right amounts of vitamins D, K and magnesium. This is an amount that ensures the total calcium intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Most supplements use inexpensive calcium carbonate which can be poorly absorbed. Our calcium is provided as dicalcium malate (DimaCal®), which is a naturally-derived, easily absorbed form of calcium manufactured by Albion Human Nutrition. As a naturally occurring organic compound, malic acid (malate) is found in apples, watermelon, plums, lychees, and cherries in high concentrations. Dicalcium malate is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Iodine

Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production and as such required for regulation overall metabolic rate, body temperature, reproduction and growth.* Iodine is found in seafood, dairy products and iodized salt.

Plant-based diets can be very low in iodine and experts recommend supplementation or iodized salt. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 150 mcg iodine per day which is 100% of the Daily Value. This is an amount that ensures the total iodine intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our iodine is sourced from naturally-derived potassium iodide, which is by far the best studied and clinically validated form of iodine with very high bioavailability. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher. We do not use iodine from kelp or related plant sources, because their iodine contents are unreliable and variable.

Magnesium

Right after calcium, magnesium is the second most important bone and tooth mineral. It is essential for nerve function and muscle contraction, and assists as a cofactor in over 300 enzymes touching virtually all metabolic pathways in our cells.*

Good food sources are whole grains, green leafy vegetables and nuts. Magnesium deficiency is common in the US, but vegans and vegetarians tend to have higher magnesium intakes.

OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides a moderate 63 mg highly soluble magnesium per day. This is an amount that ensures the total magnesium intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Most supplements use inexpensive magnesium oxide which is very poorly absorbed. Our magnesium is provided as dimagnesium malate (Albion Human Nutrition), which is a naturally-derived, water-soluble form of magnesium that’s easily absorbed. As a naturally occurring organic compound, malic acid (malate) is found in apples, watermelon, plums, lychees, and cherries in high concentration. Dimagnesium malate is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Iron

Iron is required for oxygen transport to all tissues in the body, because it is a component of hemoglobin the red blood cells. Iron is also essential for immune function, antioxidant enzymes and as a cofactor in more than a hundred enzymes involving nearly all aspects of metabolism.*

There are two forms of dietary iron. Heme iron is very bioavailable and is found only in animal-derived foods like red meat, poultry and fish. Non-heme iron is found in beans, lentils, tofu, green leafy vegetables, dried fruit and nuts. Plant-based diets generally provide similar amounts but less absorbable iron compared to mixed diets, and experts recommend supplementation for vegans.

OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 6 mg easily absorbed iron per day to ensure the total intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Our iron is provided as ferrous bisglycinate chelate (Ferrochel®, Albion Human Nutrition). Clinical studies show that Ferrochel® is highly bioavailable, safe and effective, even for infants and pregnant women. It is naturally-derived, very well tolerated and easy on the stomach. Ferrochel® does not interact with other nutrients, which is a common concern for most other iron forms used in supplements. Ferrochel® is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for immune defense and helps in the production of hemoglobin which carries oxygen in the red blood cells. Zinc is also a required cofactor for hundreds of enzymes affecting nearly all cellular pathways.*

Good food sources include seafood, red meat and beans. Phytates and fiber in whole grains can inhibit zinc absorption while animal-based proteins enhance it. Vegans and vegetarians are at risk of zinc deficiency. That’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 15 mg zinc per day to ensure the total intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Most multivitamins use inexpensive zinc oxide which is poorly absorbed. Our zinc is provided as naturally-derived zinc bisglycinate chelate (Albion Human Nutrition), which is a highly bioavailable and well-tolerated form of zinc. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Selenium

Selenium is an essential cofactor for important antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidases. It is required for healthy immune function and for the production of thyroid hormones which help maintain body temperature and metabolic rate.*

Seafood, meats and nuts are good food sources of selenium. Selenium deficiency is uncommon in the USA, but vegans and vegetarians may be at higher risk. That’s why OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 70 mcg selenium per day to ensure the total intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Selenium is provided as selenium glycinate complex (Albion Human Nutrition), which is naturally derived. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Copper

Copper is needed for iron transport and storage in the body, for antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD), and for growing and maintaining healthy connective tissues.*

Good food sources include shellfish, liver, nuts and legumes. Plant-based diets generally provide sufficient amounts of copper. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 0.5 mg copper per day to ensure the total intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Copper is provided as naturally-derived copper bisglycinate chelate (Albion Human Nutrition), which is a highly bioavailable and well-tolerated form of copper. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.

Chromium

Chromium is essential for normal insulin action and glucose metabolism.* Chromium is found in whole-grain products, meats, fish and many fruits and vegetables, especially broccoli.

There is little data available about chromium nutrition in vegans and vegetarians, but it suggests adequate intake. OptiVega® Multivitamin & Mineral provides 60 mcg chromium per day to ensure the total intake is safe, effective and well within normal physiological intakes of humans on the best diets.*

Chromium is provided exclusively as chromium-(III) nicotinate glycinate chelate (Albion Human Nutrition), which is a naturally derived organic form of bioavailable chromium. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free and kosher.
